1 - Overview: Dynamic & Static Layers

In Weather Defender, all weather layers, such as radar and satellite imagery, update on a set schedule so you always see the most current data on your screen. These are known as Dynamic layers. Geographic layers, such as roads or cities, do not change frequently and therefore do not need to update on a schedule. These are known as Static layers.

By default, all custom layers imported into Weather Defender will be treated as static. If you are using your own custom data source for Weather Defender that needs to be updated frequently, you can follow this documentation to convert that layer to a Dynamic, self-updating layer.

2 - Creating the Data Source

In order for a layer to be treated as Dynamic, it must be accessible from a URL. This means the source data must be accessible through an HTTP or HTTPS connection. This usually means that the source data will be located on a public-facing website or company intranet.

Once configured, Weather Defender will monitor this URL and automatically download updates when available.

3 - Supported Formats

Weather Defender natively supports the following data formats:
  • SHP, E00, MIF/MID, TAB, DXF, DGN, TIGER, GML, KML, VPF, GDF, SDTS, DLG, GPX, TIFF/ GeoTIFF, JPEG, JPEG2000, PNG, BMP, BIL/SPOT, ECW, MrSID, IMG, CADRG, PixelStore and grid formats (ASCII GRID, FLOAT GRID, BT, DTED, ADF), CSV (x/y table)

NOTE: Weather Defender uses WGS-84, decimal-degree format. If necessary, convert your dataset(s) accordingly.

For more detail on data formats, see the Supported Formats for Integration page.
