Saving Screenshots to Archive/Animate Weather Events

by Jamie Robinson        February 17, 2011  |  12:13 pm  |  Category: Latest News | Tips & Tricks

Expanding on our previous posting concerning High Resolution Screen Captures, Weather Defender has a feature that allows you to capture screenshots at prescribed intervals.  These can be saved to a folder on your hard drive for future viewing, archiving, or even to combine into a custom animation as shown here to watch major weather events as they unfold.

The animation shown here was captured during the major winter storm that affected 30 states at the beginning of this month.

The steps to setup timed captures are very simple:

   1. Open the map you wish to view

   2. Go to Map at the top

   3. Go to Screenshot and hit the down arrow

   4. Select Capture Settings

    5. You can now set things like:

  • How often to capture
  • Where to store the images
  • Resolution of the images

   6. Once you've selected your settings, select OK

   7. Under Map and Screencapture again, select Start Timed Captures

You're now off and running.  The files will be stored to the directory of your choice as can be seen here:

by Rory Groves        January 19, 2011  |  9:09 am  |  Category: Latest News | Tips & Tricks

(Originally Captured: 12/11/2010)

The Screen Capture function in Weather Defender allows you to capture significant weather events in real-time and archive them on your computer for future reference. Screen Captures can be taken at any dimension, provided your computer has enough horsepower to generate them. The above image was captured at 3200 x 2400 pixels (72in x 33in).

How to take Screen Captures

  1. Position (pan/zoom) your map and turn on weather/geographic layers you want visible

  2. Click the Map toolbar, then click Screenshot (or press F10)

  3. A Settings window will pop-up which allows you to modify some basic settings before saving

  4. Modify the settings as desired and click Save

Capturing at Timed-Intervals

If you wish to take screen captures at regular intervals so you may archive weather imagery while away from your computer, you may do so using the Screen Capture advanced settings:

  1. Click the Map toolbar, then click the drop-down arrow under the Screenshot button

  2. Click Capture Settings

  3. On the Settings panel, click the Timed Captures tab:

  4. Here you will find a complete menu of options for capturing screenshots on a timed-interval, including:
    • Interval in minutes
    • Location
    • Image size
    • Save-to folder
    • Filename and format
  5. Modify settings as desired

  6. Click OK

  7. Finally, click Map > Screenshot Drop-down menu > Start Timed Captures
